Early support in 2008 from the Pittsburgh Foundation saved the historic structure from demolition and funded a plan for its transformation into an artist residency. With additional seed and matching funds, the August Wilson House completed stabilization of the exterior walls of the house in 2016.
The early and catalyzing support of Denzel and Pauletta Washington and other notable luminaries such as Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Samuel and LaTanya Jackson, Laurence Fishburne, Shonda Rhimes, Antoine Fuqua and John McClain were the driving force behind the initial $5 million funding commitment toward the capital project. We have also garnered local capital support from the Richard King Mellon and Hillman Foundations.
Pittsburgh Gateways, an experienced non-profit development organization, has provided contract review and management. Candace Jackson of CJAM Consulting has provided executive consulting services to assist August Wilson House as it implements its business plan, programs and events.
